In the 16th century, the population grew immensely due to the arrival of workers from various regions to take part in the work to make the river navigable and counteract its tendency to silt up. This work made a definitive mark on the town and made it possible to diversify the local economy, which until then had depended exclusively on fishing.
Like almost all the towns in Ribatejo, Montijo has great traditions of fiesta brava, with bullfights and bull runs being essential in the town's most characteristic festivities, such as the São Pedro festivities, which take place every year at the end of June with good food and fado.
